Aberystwyth Crematorium hosts 30th anniversary open day

Aberystwyth Cemetery and Crematorium is issuing an open invitation to those living in the surrounding communities to visit and help mark its 30th anniversary.

The site is hosting a community open day on Saturday 18 May between 10am and 12 noon which will enable visitors to tour the crematorium and its landscaped grounds, as well as the crematory, if they wish.

We will be hosting an anniversary service on the day from 12:30 pm.

Visitors can also help mark the crematorium’s milestone by bringing with them items to be placed into a commemorative time capsule, which will be buried at the site ready to be opened in another 30 years, in 2054.

Aberystwyth Cemetery & Crematorium is part of Westerleigh Group, one of the UK’s largest independent owners and operators of crematoria and cemeteries, with 40 sites in England, Scotland, and Wales, all set within beautifully landscaped gardens of remembrance which provide pleasant, peaceful places for people to visit and reflect.

Westerleigh Group prides itself on providing exceptional care to the bereaved, the standards of which are inspected by the Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) in England and Wales, and the Scottish Government.

Manager Rachel Harrison has been caring for the needs of the bereaved at the crematorium since 2017 and is passionate about working with Funeral Directors, clergy and celebrants to ensure that every family is given the opportunity for a service that is uniquely personal to them.

This means that, with the Welsh tradition of singing, an organ and organist are available for families who want a traditional service while an extensive music library is available for others, as well as the opportunity for a personalised photographic tribute to be played on large screens.

Rachel said: “We are really looking forward to welcoming visitors to our site, where they can meet our friendly and supportive team and find out all about the exceptional care that we have provided to our local communities for the past 30 years.

“And of course, we hope to continue to serve local people for the next 30 years and beyond!

“I’m excited to see what items local people will bring to put into our time capsule.

“This open day is available to anyone, even if it’s just to look around and understand what we do because you live nearby and fortunately, haven’t yet had a need to visit us. Everyone is welcome, whatever your reason. No appointment is necessary.”

Aberystwyth Cemetery & Crematorium first opened in 1994 and was dedicated by The Archbishop of Wales, The Most Reverend Alwyn Rice Jones.

The site was first granted planning permission for a crematorium more than 30 years before, in 1963, but this had lapsed due to funding issues.

The site became part of Westerleigh Group in the late 1990s.

Mae Rheolwr yr Amlosgfa, Rachel Harrison, wedi bod yn gofalu am anghenion y rhai sy’n galaru ers 2017 ac yn frwd dros weithio gyda Threfnwyr Angladdau, Clerigwyr a Gweinyddion er mwyn sicrhau bod pob teulu’n cael y cyfle i gael gwasanaeth sy’n bersonol iddyn nhw.

Felly, yn unol â’r traddodiad Cymreig balch o ganu cynulleidfaol, mae yna organ ac organydd ar gael i deuluoedd sy’n dymuno gwasanaeth traddodiadol ac i eraill, mae gan y llyfrgell gerddoriaeth bron unrhyw gân neu ddarn o gerddoriaeth sydd wedi ei recordio’n fashnachol ynghyd â chyfle i baratoi teyrnged ffotograffig bersonol gellir ei chwarae yn ystod y gwasanaeth ar sgrin fawr.

Meddai Rachel :“Ry’ ni’n edrych ymlaen yn fawr i groesawu ymwelwyr i’r safle lle gallant gwrdd â’n tîm cyfeillgar a chefnogol a gweld dros eu hunain y gofal arbennig ry’n ni wedi ei ddarparu i’r cymunedau lleol dros y 30 mlynedd diwethaf.

“Ac wrth gwrs, ry’ ni’n gobeithio parhau â’r gwasanaeth hwn ar ran y bobl leol am 30 mlynedd arall  a thu hwnt!

“Rwy’n gyffrous iawn i weld pa eitemau bydd gan bobl i’w rhoi yn ein capsiwl coffa.

“Mae’r dathliad hwn yn agored i bawb hyd yn oed y rhai hynny sy’n byw gerllaw ac, yn ffodus, heb gael achos i fynychu’r amlosgfa eto, ond sydd â diddordeb i weld y gwaith ry’ ni’n ei wneud. Beth bynnag  yw’ch rheswm, mae croeso i bawb.  Does dim angen gwneud apwyntiad.”

Agorwyd Mynwent ac Amlosgfa Aberystwyth yn 1994 a chysegrwyd gan Archesgob Cymru, Y Gwir Barchedig Alwyn Rice Jones.

Rhoddwyd caniatâd cynllunio ar gyfer safle’r Amlosgfa ddeng mlynedd ar hugain yng nghynt yn 1963 ond daeth i ben oherwydd diffyg cyllid.

Ymunodd Mynwent ac Amlosgfa Aberystwyth â’r Westerleigh Group ddiwedd y 90au.
